WATER CONSERVATION

The Long Beach Water Department urges residents and businesses to begin implementing the following water conservation measures immediately.

1. Eliminate landscape over- watering and water runoff, water your garden or lawn during the cool parts of the day.  Early morning is better than dusk since it helps prevent the growth of fungus. Please give your sprinkler systems a tune-up!

2. Reduce your time in the shower and install a low-flow shower head.  Free low-flow shower heads are available at Long Beach Water Dept., 1800 E. Wardlow Rd. or Office of Councilman Patrick O’Donnell, 4th District (562) 570-6918.

3. Check your water meter for leaks.  Turn off the taps in your house and check to see if the meter is still running.

4. Run only full loads in the washing machine and dishwasher.

5. Use a broom instead of a hose to clean sidewalks, driveways or gutters.

This request is preceded by a record low snowfall and rainfall in the State of California for the last several years.  The Long Beach Board of Water Commissioners may declare more serious Stages of its Emergency Water Supply Shortage Plan, triggering increased mandatory prohibitions on water use in the City of Long Beach.

Letter to Press Telegram Editor- Women Ambushed

Dear Editor

On June 8, 2007 eight professional women were downtown enjoying themselves walking on Seaside Way south of Ocean Blvd. in the Pike area.  They were in two groups of four each.  One group was ambushed and brutally assaulted by two black men in their 20’s.  Two woman were struck in the head from behind and forcibly pushed to the ground.  A third was hit in the face as she came to her friends defense.  The fourth woman ran to summon help.  The two assailants jumped into cars that appeared to be waiting for them.  The women lost the contents of their purses, including cash, ID’s and credit cards.  One of the victims indicated that several hundred dollars in charges later appeared on one of her stolen credit cards.  What took place sounded like a violent, coordinated, strong armed robbery.

To compound this crime is the Press Telegrams complete silence of reporting this incident to the public. Who silenced you PT?  Chamber of Commerce? Downtown Developers? Who? Many incidental matters occupied your paper last week, but nowhere was this brutal attack reported! Why not?

Cabrillo Beach

We recently spent an afternoon at the Cabrillo Beach tide pools– one of our favorite quick getaways.  Each little pool filled with tiny hermit crabs, sea anemone and urchins provided hours of entertainment and the scenic beach was a relaxing escape from the everyday.

Cabrillo Beach is about a mile-long, gorgeous, and has something for everyone. There you can scuba dive, surf, fish, take a wind surfing lesson or just take a relaxing walk along the shore. Depending on the season, you can whale watch or watch the grunion lay their eggs on the beach under a full moon.

We also like to stop in atThe Cabrillo Marine Aquarium (my favorite aquarium) and particularly enjoy the aquatic nursery. It is well worth the $5 per adult and $1 per child suggested donation. They also offer tons of educational programs and activities. www.cabrilloaq.org

JetBlue Founder Sells Portion of Holdings

Reuters reports investor George Soros and David Neeleman sold large shares of JetBlue and it’s not sending a positive message.

Reuter: Soros and JetBlue Founder Sell Some Holdings.

Flights have dramatically increased and the city’s noise ordinance has been impacted  since JetBlue became the largest tenant at the Long Beach Airport in 2001. What, if any, effect this will have on  airport expansion and it’s financing remains to be seen. You can read more LBReport.com.
